Vicky Burnett Obituary

Vicky Dare Hostler-Burnett was born on July 15, 1945 and left this earth to be with Jesus on December 28, 2019. The bright light of Vicky has left this world and she will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.

To know her was to know real, genuine love, and caring. She knew how to make you feel cared for and she knew how to make you smile and laugh. Vicky was the most thoughtful woman and wrote letters and sent cards and never complained. We know this light and love live on now in her husband and children.

Vicky is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Jesse Carl Burnett, and their six children — Jesse Dean Burnett II and his wife Dolli Rose, David Burnett, Michael Burnett, Jonathan Burnett, Deborah Struck, Idell (Laci) Burnett as well as 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Vicky was preceded in death by her mother, Idell Moon-Brock, and her father, Darrel Hostler.

Many people were touched by Vicky’s work as both a teacher and university counselor. Among her professional achievements she helped establish the Native American Career Education and Natural Resources (NACENR) program. She recruited & counseled Native American students from reservations across the country to attend Humboldt State University. Vicky’s dedication to the program successfully grew from less than 10 students to more than 60 students a year. In her early career she taught many people young and old how to read through adult education.

Vicky loved art, education and learning. She considered herself a lifelong student, always thirsting to learn more and encouraging others to pursue education as well. Vicky was an accomplished artist and watercolorist. She graduated from Humboldt State University with Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and Teaching then continued her education there earning a Master’s Degree in Native American Studies.

Vicky was a proud member of the Hoopa Tribe and she loved her extended family, cousins, aunts and uncles which are numerous and she always prayed for them and for all of the Native people in her community. Hoopa was always thought of as home for her.

But out of all of Vicky’s life concerns, pursuits and accomplishments, her greatest joys were her marriage, raising her kids and her spiritual journey in learning and teaching others about the Bible and God’s Love through Jesus Christ.

To all those hurting and feeling this loss, hear what she would say to your heart, “Because he (Jesus) lives, You can face tomorrow, because He lives all fear is gone, because I know He holds the future, so now I know life is worth living because He lives.” Vicky, we will see you in the next life in Heaven and you will be greatly missed.
