Angels on duty when our mother received her wings on March 21, 2018 at the Granada Rehabilitation Center in Eureka, California. Maxine received excellent care, by the staff and under the wonderful management of Alice Brasier.
Maxine enjoyed making T.V. commercials for Granada, we call her our T.V. star. She was often greeted by the public on her outings as they had seen her on T.V., what a special joy it gave her.
Maxine was born February 18, 1923, she was the last member of her family of three sisters and one brother. As a young girl they moved from Oklahoma to San Diego, California.
Maxine met and married Fred Nielsen of Korbel, California, where they started their family, Kay and Fred Nielsen. They moved to Blue Lake, California in 1945 where they became very active in the community.
Fred and Maxine enjoyed their horseback rides in the beautiful mountains and trails around Humboldt County.
Maxine was a member of the Cowbell’s Association, was past president of the Blue Lake Schools P.T.A., and wrote articles for the Times Standard and Arcata Union.
She attended Humboldt State University, later becoming librarian for the city of Blue Lake, California
She was known to ride her horse during the day, and later put on a formal dress and attend the Rebecca Lodge Number 122.
With life’s changes and the passing of husband Fred Nielsen, Maxine later remarried, Perry Hayes (deceased) Commander and Chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Northern California, Maxine was also a life time member of the VFW
Maxine is survived by her son, Fred Nielsen and his wife, Rose; daughter, Katherine Collins and her husband, Jack; grandchildren, Wes and Rita Lane, Fredrick Nielsen and late Tammy Nielsen followed by numerous great grandchildren.
Words can never be enough to say thank you to Granada Manager Alice Braiser and her excellent care team.
Thank you to Dr. Robert Mott, Dr. Dana, Dr. Harmon and Dr. Jannson.
