Mayer Harold Segal

Mayer was born in Elbow Lake, Minnesota on June 17, 1917 and moved to Los Angeles when he was nine. He graduated from UCLA with a degree in Chemistry in 1939 and later that year went to work for the State Relief Administration in Visalia, assisting the Dust Bowl immigrants. This was the start of Mayer's life-long commitment to assisting the less fortunate. Mayer moved to Berkeley and worked in the shipyards during WWII. He became a journeyman machinist and was a proud member of the IAM.

He was a dedicated family man and always said his greatest joy came from having children and grandchildren that both got along with each other and cared about making the world a better place. He married his soul mate, Betty, in 1956 and they were together for over fifty years until her death in 2010. Throughout his long life he supported and participated in the struggles for social justice, peace and a healthy environment. In the Bay Area he and Betty were involved with many different groups and also published the Peace and Freedom News. On his one trip outside of North America, he travelled to Estel¡, Nicaragua to help set up a machine shop with the group TEKNICA.

After moving to Bayside in 1994, he continued to be involved in global and local issues, including the HOPE Coalition, notable for the voter guide compiled at election times. Mayer and Betty found a welcoming community in Humboldt County and were always happy that they had spent their later years here.

He lives on in his children, Joseph Allen, Louis Segal, David Allen, Andrew Allen, and Mara Segal, as well as in their spouses and children. Mayer died on December 14, 2017. With his sweet smile, his patience and his indomitable spirit, he had made the world a better place.
